Dhyana is a Sanskrit word. It is derived from root words 'dhi' meaning 'the mind' and 'yana' meaning 'moving'.
First of all what the word meditation means?
The English word meditation in a way does not really mean anything. In the sense it does not say anything specific, if anybody sits normally with their eyes closed, it is assumed that they must be meditating. One can sit with their eyes closed and do many things. You can do:
Japa (The term means muttering, whispering or murmuring passages from the scripture, or charms, or names of deity. Often it is the repetitive singing of a verse or mantra, sometimes counted with the help of a rosary which is called japamala.)
Dharana (Dhāraṇā is translated as "collection or concentration of the mind", or "the act of holding, bearing, wearing, supporting, maintaining, retaining, keeping back, a good memory", or "firmness, steadfastness, certainty". This term is related to the verbal Sanskrit roots dha and ana, to hold, carry, maintain, resolve.)
Dhayana (Dhyana is a term used for the seventh anga (limb or level) in the eight-step Yoga practice of Sage Patanjali. This state is penultimate to Samadhi or “absorption.” Unfortunately, the word dhyana is usually translated as meditation, implying a state of abiding calm.)
Shunya (Sunya is a Sanskrit word meaning "zero," "nothing," "empty" or "void." It is derived from the root, svi, meaning "hollow." It is also the root word for sunyata, which means "emptiness" or "nothingness." Sunya is the state of nothingness.)
Samadhi (Samadhi is a state of profound and utterly absorptive contemplation of the Absolute that is undisturbed by desire, anger, or any other ego-generated thought or emotion. It is a state of joyful calm, or even of rapture and beatitude, in which one maintains one's full mental alertness and acuity.)
So, word Meditation in English language does not specify much. Generally it is assumed that meditation means "Dhyana".
One Fundamental thing we need to understand is that "Meditation cannot be done" because meditation is a quality and quality is a consequence of certain processes, you can initiate a process or you can conduct a process but you cannot conduct a quality. Quality is just a consequence.
For Example: If we are planning to have a plant of your favourite flowers in your garden. The first steps you have to think and take care of is soil, seeds, manure, water, sunlight, etc none of these things look like your favourite flower, but if you manage to take care of these things flowers will happen. All you have to do is "Create a suitable environment inside and outside in which they can nurture and grow".
If one cultivate their physical body, mental body, emotional body and energy body to a certain level of maturity, one will be naturally meditative 24 hours of a day.
"Meditation is not an impairment that you have to close your eyes and sit at one place"
Meditation is an empowerment which enhance your ability to do whatever is needed to do in given situation and still remain untouched but unfortunately majority of time in name of meditation people are striving how to stop their mind. It took millions of years of evolution to get a mind of such an amazing capability, millions of years of natures tremendous work and now most human beings want to stop it.
Let us understand this first, why in first place we want to stop it?
We do not mind meditating if our heart is beating all the time, why not with mind working all the time? Is really brain a problem?
It is a conspiracy of human stupidity against intelligence.
It is like when we are stuck in a traffic jam it is a different experience, but the same view from sky looks wonderful and fun when we create little distance and watching it closely and knowing what it is, not involved then we understand what problem really is, and once there is a little or more gap depending on how meditative you are between thoughts and mind activity you will start noticing, mind was never a problem neither thoughts were. Right now the only problem is we are entangling ourselves with every thought comes and trying to fix whatever comes, emphasis should be on fixing ourself in such a way that whatever comes, you will be fine. Yoga means many things to many people. One thing is to avoid hell like torture from muscle stiffness, but even if you're sent to hell you will think you are in heaven after Hatha Yoga. Nobody can ever torture your inside again. Hatha is a phenomenal science, it is a way of building a platform. Our body, mind and energy system are essentially a platform to experience life, the question is just how profound experience of life is.
